Thematic Preaching – Luke on Love

In May 2023, while perusing vendor tables at the Festival of Homiletics, my eyes caught a book entitled, UnCommon Preaching: An Alternative to the Lectionary. I picked it up, flipped through the pages and struck up a conversation with its author, Rev. Susan E. Cartmell. I left with a copy of the book and a new energy for preaching outside of the lectionary box. In September 2023, equipped with a year of themes, I stepped away from lectionary preaching and moved toward thematic worship. This practice has transformed both me as a preacher as well as the faith communities I serve. One month at a time we focus on relevant themes guided by a broader range of scripture than we were engaging with when we stuck strictly to the Revised Common Lectionary. We have explored themes like hospitality, justice, vocation, prayer, neighbor and covenant. I have seen people embody these themes as we live into them together. My one hesitancy with moving away from the lectionary was wondering where I would find liturgical pieces to accompany the themes. Initially, Susan wrote some liturgy for me to ease this transition in my congregations. Now, I have found that choosing themes and writing liturgy is something I enjoy. It has enriched my worship preparation and helps me live more fully into the themes I preach on each week. I hope these liturgical pieces will equip you to break the script of the lectionary and find a new energy for preaching through themes that expand your pastoral imagination and the Biblical literacy of your people.
